MxM The MxM expresscard/34 will record at 1920 x 1080/50i or 60i35mb/s HQ in the same way as your SxS Pro memory card will record. This is the most popular format the majority of video operators will record at.

By utilising a combination of MxM expresscard/34 and a reasonably priced SDHC memory card, film makers and videographers on location can now shoot for days, without the unnecessary and costly need of extra equipment to safeguard their footage to e.g. laptops or PCs. They can off-load at their convenience at a later stage and reduce interruptions during the filming process.

MxM expresscard/34 in combination with the most accepted SDHC memory cards can over crank at 720p/42fps to 50fps successfully, depending upon the speed and durability of the memory card. You may be able to achieve a higher rate, but only for short periods (10s - 3s long clips) as it is limited to Sony's EX1/EX3 implementation of USB interface and the speed of the SDHC memory card.

On EX1R cameras, over cranking is achievable to 60fps.

MXM cards will only work with firmware 1.11_0531 and 1.12 on EX1. All EX1 cameras produced post August 2008 come with this update. There are no present issues with firmware on EX3 cameras, as all EX3s are made USB enabled from release. If your camera does not have this update you will have to go back to Sony to have the firmware updated. There are links on the internet which show you how to update manually, but we highly recommend you use a Sony repair centre to complete it.

Why should I use a MxM card instead of Sony SxS card?
The biggest considerations to use the MXM cards are price and application. For example, if you don’t use the over cranking feature on your camera there is no disadvantage. This has led producers to be able to complete shoots without the need to offload to their laptop or PC. Some producers are completing several days of shooting and downloading when they return to the studio. Others are handing over the SDHC cards at the end of the shoot, in the same way they did with tape.

Please observe the following precautions when working with SDHC memory cards and MxM:

  1. Always wait for the red light to go green before pressing record.
  2. If you are using only 1 16GB or 32GB card, don’t always fill it up to the end and leave a few minutes space as the SDHC card shows more minutes on screen than the original Sony SxS cards.
  3. In regards to using 32GB and in case you can’t reformat the card on your consequetive attempt, again, please don’t panic, just reinsert it into the camera and follow the instructions on the screen.
  4. Never unplug the card from the laptop or PC without firstly un-plugging it from the software, using the “Safely remove hardware” option.
  5. Never use the SD slot on the laptop to transfer your footage to your hard drive as doing so may corrupt your data and SDHC card, use our 34 adapter or certified reader.
  6. On the rare occasions when you get a media error during recording, just please calmly reinsert the adapter into the camera and follow the instructions on the screen to restore the data.
  7. As a safety precaution, always try to have your A and B slots occupied with recording media during production.
  8. Do not consecutively use SxS Pro (PCIe interface) and SHDC adapters (USB interface) as this can create unforeseen results.
  9. Do not eject the SDHC memory card from the adapter while still in the camera. We have known cases where the memory card will become damaged over time.

Sony and MxM highly recommend that during shooting that the user waits for the light to change to green after inserting the media prior to commencing recording. Equally, when the user stops recording, to wait again for the light to go green before restarting recording. The same principle applies when the user would like to preview the footage after recording, to wait for the green light prior to activating recording review mode. Failing to do so can result in corrupted media and results in unreadable data which will require specialist software to retrieve it. In the majority of cases, that media becomes unusable again. On occasions the user may encounter a media error which is not the same as corrupted data and can be easily restored with ejection and reinserting the card and following Sony’s on screen media restore instructions.

Other common failures of memory cards can be caused by:

  • Obvious damage.
  • Unplugging devices during a read or write function, the device can fail permanently!
  • Reformatting memory cards after each shoot is not always necessary. Simple deletion of footage either on camera or through Sony’s clip browser is sufficient.
